SAAA Celebrated March for Meals with the national organization Meals on Wheels – America. Last week, SAAA held Cookie Contests at six Senior Centers with Community Champions judging the cookies baked by participants. This week the winning recipe from each Center will be baked, and the cookies will be delivered along with the Meals on Wheels lunches. It’s a way to bring a little sweetness and some attention to the homebound who are sometimes invisible and forgotten in our communities.

Frederick County Senior Center held its contest on Monday. The winning recipe – Mom’s Oatmeal Raisin Cookies – was baked by Carolyn Settle. In addition to her blue ribbon, she received a $35 gift card. Our Community Champions and judges for this contest were: Stephen Rickards, Stephens City Town Treasurer, John W. Jones, I, Stephens City Fire & EMS Chief, Dudley Rinker with the Stephens City Lions Club, Donielle Palmer, Director of Resident Services at Shenandoah Valley Westminster Canterbury and SAAA Advisory Council Member, and Michella Orndorff with Stephens City Insurance Agency.

Second place Winner was Betty Brickman who received a $20 Gift Card and the third place winner, Geneva Campbell, received a $10 gift card.

Here’s the winning recipe from Carolyn Settle:

Mom’s Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

Mix 1 cup granulated sugar, 1 cup brown sugar, 1 cup softened butter, 1 tsp. salt, 1 tsp. baking soda, 1 tsp. baking powder, and 1 Tsp. vanilla.   Add 2 eggs and mix until combined.   Mix in 2 cups flour.  Then fold in 3 cups oatmeal and 1 cup of raisins.  Bake on ungreased cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes.
